Floral

Flowers were not merely beautiful, in the 17^thcentury they were the subject of a mania.  Flower paintings were expressions of great wealth – and a lesson that wealth and life were transient and the viewer should avoid the mortal sin of vanity. The insects often hidden in the foliage amplify this message.
